CHANDHARA Afghan Hounds
.No, these puppies are not for sale. They were born several years ago, and were in their new homes many years back.
Their dam was the lovely Ch Chandhara Chahcheran Shades of Winter.
If you found this site when looking for a puppy, the first thing you will want to know is whether I have any puppies for sale. We did plan on breeding a litter in 2023 from Grand. Ch. and UKC Ch.Chandhara's Now Raining Stars, daughter of Ch. Chandhara's Lodestar, but this was delayed. We are delighted to have puppies born July 2024 sired by Ch Chandhara Terlez Dilawar. There were only 3 and all girls! One black and silver, one black and tan and one white. This litter was co-bred by myself and DeVaune Johnson and we are delighted with their quality and structure. No puppies are available but we do plan on having another litter in the New Year.
Do all my puppies have to go to show homes? No, they don't, but if you do want to show I will be delighted. I would love to hear from those who plan a long term involvement in the breed, but if you just want one show dog to satisfy a lifetime dream, I would like to hear from you too. We need new serious fanciers in the breed as well as devoted pet and companion owners.
Unfortunately, due to technical problems ALL my incoming mail prior to this year was wiped from the mail server (IMAP), from now on all e-mail will be archived. If you wrote to me before and would like to remain in contact, please write to me again, I will be happy to hear from you.
As you have already found out, Afghan Hound puppies are not as readily available as they were many years ago, and you are wondering why. One person asked me if there had been some horrible disease that had affected the breed - absolutely not! The breed is still among the healthier breeds and the incidence of the known hereditary defects is low. Breed numbers have been going down steadily from the peak years of the mid 1970s in the US, Canada, the UK and even Australia. In the US it has been a case of attrition. Breeders who have ceased breeding over the past 20-30 years have not been replaced by an equal number of newcomers to the dog show - breeding world. Fewer breeders, fewer puppies! Sadly this has also given the green light to the less desirable opportunists and fly-by-nights, some marketing puppies that may not even exist!
Your next question will be - how much does an Afghan Hound puppy cost? There is no simple, single answer to that one! Over the past couple of years I have seen puppies advertised at everything from $1000 - $4500, puppies that actually do exist, that is. The scammers who advertise pretty puppies, using photos they have lifted off the internet may ask less, with the same type of scam as the old "missionary in Africa" scam, tempting people with what looks like a bargain. The price range will vary, but the average price for a puppy from a known breeder and whose dogs have been successful in the show ring will be around $3500, subject to individual terms and conditions, and could be higher. There should be no price difference based on gender, and as all colors are equal according to the the breed standard, there should be no price difference based on color.
Established Afghan Hound breeders will, in almost all cases, require the puppy buyer to sign a sales contract. This should cover the price to be paid, any additional conditions, and a health guarantee. This contract should have complete registration data, and microchip number if chipped before sale. Ask for a blank e-mail copy of the contract in advance so that there are no nasty surprises when you go to pick up your puppy, such as a co-ownership requirement that has not been disclosed in advance.
